Effective Herbal Acne Remedies

By Caryn Windfield

Acne is a horrible and embarrassing condition that can effect anyone, regardless of age, sex, race or creed. The red blemishes can appear in a variety of locations, though they most commonly make appearances on the face, back and buttocks. Treating acne with natural health remedies targets and supports the bodies ability to metabolize carbohydrates and fats, assisting lymphatic drainage and elimination. Boosting the bodies ability to do these things will greatly reduce the frequency and severity of acne breakouts in the future. It can also prevent future outbreaks from occurring altogether.

Internal Treatment:

There are many different herbal acne remedies and mineral supplements that can be taken to help battle acne. Taking 30 to 80 mg of zinc everyday, for example, helps the body heal scarred tissue that can be left behind after an acne breakout. It also balances the bodies hormones, decreasing the risk of acne. A lack of potassium may cause additional acne problems, so eating plenty of bananas may significantly reduce acne. Otherwise, simply taking a potassium supplement according to the manufacturer's directions will deliver the same benefits.

Several different herbs may be transmuted into a hot tea as a home remedy for acne. One of the most potent combinations includes blue flag, echinacea, burdock and yellow dock. Mix an equal amount of each of the dried herbs together and infuse with hot water. Strain out the excess herbs and drink hot to treat acne. Another effective tea you can make with herbs includes a combination of burdock, sarsaparilla and dandelion. Mix and make a tea just as in the previous recipe.

External Treatment:

External treatment is just as effective as internal treatment, but can be delivered directly to the problem, resulting in faster relief. Applying a nutrient rich juice to the acne blemishes three times per day will successfully reduce the risk and duration of acne outbreaks. Effective juices include tea tree oil, fresh lemon juice or cabbage juice. Dab a small amount of the liquid onto the acne at each application. Dab a bit of the juice on the hand or arm prior to applying to ensure no allergic reactions will occur.

A tincture made from gold seal can also be used to treat acne herbally. A small amount of the tincture should be applied to the afflicted area two to three times per day to treat the affliction. Make sure to use a proven and safe tincture recipe to avoid personal injury. Never use any kind of alcohol but 80 to 100 proof vodka or rum.
